I can see how this could be critical, but I know that the reason we can only assign a contact to one person is because of SmartPlans and that the pre-built SmartPlans are currently set up to go out from the assignee. An example would be the neighborhood nurtures. If you have multiple assignees to the contact, you would need to designate a "Primary" assignee who would be that default for the SmartPlans to come from.
